Urban areas with greater than 200,000 population are designated Transportation Management Areas (TMA) by the US Department of Transportation. After the 2000 Census, the Huntsville urban area surpassed the population threshold for TMA designation. As a TMA, every four years the Huntsville-Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, along with its member jurisdictions, ALDOT, and local transit providers, undergo a comprehensive review of transportation planning by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). This certification review will assess compliance with Federal regulations pertaining to the transportation planning process.
There will be an opportunity on April 13, 2021 from 5-7PM for the public to share their opinions of the MPO and the local transportation planning process with representatives from the FHWA and the FTA. The event will take place virtually (email longrangeplanning “at” huntsvilleal.gov for login information).
The purpose of these meetings is not project-specific; the FHWA and FTA are looking at the transportation planning process as a whole. Some sample questions asked at prior federal review public meetings are:
- Are you provided with the opportunity to participate in the transportation planning and programming process?
- Do you receive adequate notice of transportation planning and programming activities?
- What are the positive aspects of the transportation planning process?
- What suggestions do you have for improving the process?
